About Emaaus

Welcome to the official website of the East Mediterranean Association of Architectural and Urban Studies, also known as Emaaus. Our association is dedicated to the advancement and promotion of architectural and urban studies in the East Mediterranean region, which includes Lebanon, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, palestine/Israel, Egypt, jordan, iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman and Yemen.

Emaaus was founded in 2022 by a group of architects, urban planners, and academics who recognized the need for a professional organization that would facilitate dialogue and collaboration among professionals working in the field of architecture and urban studies in the East Mediterranean. Since then, Emaaus has grown into a vibrant and dynamic association with a membership that includes professionals and students from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds.

Our mission at Emaaus is to promote excellence in architectural and urban studies by fostering communication, collaboration, and exchange of knowledge and expertise among our members. We believe that by working together, we can contribute to the development of sustainable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive architecture and urbanism in the East Mediterranean region.

To achieve our mission, Emaaus organizes a variety of activities and initiatives, including conferences, workshops, lectures, and exhibitions. These events provide opportunities for our members to share their research and projects, engage in critical discussions, and learn from each other. We also publish a quarterly journal, the Emaaus Journal of Architectural and Urban Studies, which features articles and reviews by leading scholars and practitioners in the field.

One of our primary goals at Emaaus is to promote interdisciplinarity and collaboration among professionals working in different fields related to architecture and urban studies. We believe that by bringing together architects, urban planners, historians, sociologists, geographers, and other professionals, we can develop a more holistic and integrated approach to architecture and urbanism. This approach is particularly relevant in the East Mediterranean, where the complexity and diversity of urban contexts require multidisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives.

Another important goal of Emaaus is to support the professional development of our members, particularly young professionals and students. To this end, we offer a range of opportunities for networking, mentorship, and career development, including a mentorship program, a job board, and a scholarship program for students and early-career professionals.

Finally, Emaaus is committed to promoting social and environmental sustainability in architecture and urbanism. We believe that architecture and urbanism have a profound impact on the quality of life, social cohesion, and environmental health of communities, and that professionals working in these fields have a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of society and the planet. To this end, we encourage our members to embrace sustainable and ethical practices in their work, and to engage with local communities and stakeholders in the design and planning process.

We hope that this brief introduction has given you a sense of the mission and goals of Emaaus. We invite you to explore our website further to learn more about our activities, events, publications, and membership benefits. If you share our passion for architecture and urban studies in the East Mediterranean, we encourage you to join our community and contribute to our collective efforts to advance the field.

EMAAUS is short for “East Mediterranean Association of Architectural and Urban Studies”. It is an effort to bring together academics, practitioners and researchers in a part of the world that has lacked sufficient exposure in terms of studies of its architectural body of work and its urban fabric.

What’s in the  name:

The intentional use of the term “East Mediterranean” attempts to avoid historic designations of “Middle East”, or “Near East”, or “MENA” region as these are Eurocentric designations. It also tries to avoid using terms such as  “Arab World” or “Islamic World” as these are lingo-ethnic and religious designations which are limiting in their scope. The Mediterranean Sea therefore acts as a geographical reference that encompasses these localities in terms of their architectural and urban developments and diversity.

To become a part of the association, you have to be a professional, academic or a researcher. Academic institutions are highly encouraged to become an active voice in the dissemination of research for the better development of our urban and architectural heritages.
