At EMAAUS, we believe that sustainable development is essential for creating livable, equitable, and resilient cities. Our mission is to promote sustainable architecture and urban planning practices that respect the environment, meet the needs of all residents, and ensure a healthy and prosperous future for generations to come.
Sustainable Architecture
Sustainable architecture is an approach to building design that prioritizes the efficient use of resources, reduces the environmental impact of buildings, and promotes the health and well-being of occupants. At EMAAUS, we believe that sustainable architecture can play a key role in creating more livable and resilient cities. We encourage architects and designers to integrate sustainable design principles into their projects, including:
-Energy efficiency: designing buildings that use energy-efficient materials and systems to reduce energy consumption and lower carbon emissions.
-Water conservation: incorporating water-efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting, and greywater recycling systems to conserve water resources.
-Natural ventilation: designing buildings that allow for natural ventilation and airflow, reducing the need for mechanical cooling systems.
-Use of local materials: using locally sourced materials to reduce transportation emissions and support local economies.
Passive solar design: orienting buildings to maximize solar gain and minimize heat loss, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling systems.
Sustainable Urban Planning
-Sustainable urban planning is an approach to city planning that prioritizes the needs of all residents, promotes equitable access to resources, and ensures the long-term viability of urban ecosystems. At EMAAUS, we believe that sustainable urban planning can help create cities that are more livable, resilient, and equitable. We encourage urban planners and policymakers to integrate sustainable principles into their work, including:
-Walkable and bikeable neighborhoods: designing cities that prioritize walking and cycling, promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing the need for motorized transportation.
-Public transportation: developing efficient and accessible public transportation systems that reduce congestion, emissions, and improve air quality.
-Green infrastructure: integrating green infrastructure, such as parks, green roofs, and urban gardens, into the city fabric to improve air quality, reduce the urban heat island effect, and provide space for recreation and relaxation.
-Affordable housing: promoting the development of affordable and accessible housing to ensure that all residents can enjoy the benefits of a sustainable city.
-Community engagement: involving residents in the planning process to ensure that their needs and perspectives are taken into account and to promote a sense of ownership and community in the development process.
The East Mediterranean Association of Architectural and Urban Studies (EMAAUS) is committed to promoting sustainability in architecture and urbanism in the East Mediterranean region. To achieve this goal, we have developed an action plan that outlines specific steps that EMAAUS will take to promote sustainability. This action plan is outlined below:
Develop educational resources and workshops
EMAAUS will develop educational resources and workshops for architects, urban planners, and other professionals in the industry. These resources will provide guidance on sustainable building practices, including using renewable energy sources, incorporating green spaces, and using sustainable materials in construction. Workshops will provide hands-on training and opportunities for professionals to share their experiences and learn from each other.
Advocate for sustainable policies and practices
EMAAUS will advocate for sustainable policies and practices at the local, national, and international levels. We will work with policymakers to promote the adoption of sustainable building codes, regulations, and incentives. We will also work with industry associations to promote the adoption of sustainable practices by architects and urban planners.
Engage with the public
EMAAUS will engage with the public to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in architecture and urbanism. We will provide educational resources, host public events, and collaborate with community organizations to promote sustainable practices and principles. We will also work with the media to raise awareness about sustainable building practices and their benefits.
Highlight sustainable examples
EMAAUS will highlight examples of sustainable architecture and urbanism in the East Mediterranean region. We will develop case studies and share them on our website, social media channels, and in our educational resources. By highlighting these examples, we hope to inspire other architects and urban planners to adopt sustainable practices.
Collaborate with other organizations
EMAAUS will collaborate with other organizations to promote sustainability in architecture and urbanism. We will work with universities, industry associations, and non-profit organizations to develop joint educational programs, advocate for sustainable policies, and promote sustainable practices.
Monitor and evaluate progress
EMAAUS will monitor and evaluate our progress in promoting sustainability. We will develop indicators to measure the impact of our educational programs, advocacy efforts, and public engagement activities. We will use this information to continuously improve our efforts and ensure that we are making a meaningful contribution to promoting sustainability in architecture and urbanism in the East Mediterranean region.
